About Us
About Us
Takumi Woodwork was first established in Niseko in 2015. After the first year I returned to the UK to be close to my father during his final illness. Following a period working in the United Kingdom, I came back to Hokkaido in 2020 to continue building the company.
For the first three years we shared a workshop with Island Snowboards, gradually expanding our capabilities while taking on a wide range of commissions. In August 2023 we moved into our own workshop, a converted barn on the edge of Kutchan. Since then we have been balancing customer work with the slow, practical process of renovating the building, installing machinery, and preparing the site for long-term use.
Takumi Woodwork specialises in bespoke furniture and cabinetry, combining traditional methods with modern production techniques such as CNC machining and laser engraving. The focus is on reliable workmanship, enduring materials, and quiet attention to detail.
Our new showroom, opening from late 2025, will give customers the opportunity to see our work directly. It is intended as a place for straightforward conversation — somewhere to see materials, test proportions, and consider projects in a setting designed more for clarity than for show.
We are a small workshop by choice. This allows us to work closely with clients, architects, and designers, and to keep standards consistent from initial design through to installation. The aim is to produce furniture and fittings that serve their purpose well, withstand daily use, and sit naturally in the spaces they occupy.
‘Takumi’ means ‘artisan’ in Japanese
Our name reflects our dedication to exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail.
Our journey began with master joiner Louis Higgins, a time-served carpenter and joiner from the Isle of Man, U.K. Louis first came to Japan in 2015 and was captivated.
His passion for varied woodworking techniques led him again from the UK to Niseko in 2016. Inspired by the region’s rich character, Louis successfully established Takumi Woodwork in the UK before bringing his vision back to its spiritual home in Hokkaido in 2020.
OUR WORKSHOP
Our beautifully renovated workshop & showroom in Kutchan stands as a testament to our evolution.
Housed in a thoughtfully restored farmer’s warehouse, this space embodies who we are– honoring traditional craftsmanship while embracing contemporary design. The space serves as both our creative workshop and a welcoming
environment where clients can experience the Takumi difference firsthand.
Our workshop crafts both custom and collection pieces using timber from Hokkaido and other Japanese regions.
We repurpose all hardwood wood offcuts into small items like keyrings and toys, and softwood offcuts are used as fuel. Our sawdust is made into heating briquettes for sale.
